LIT 185C Early Modern Comedy

Speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in Italian required. The courtly, popular, and populist traditions in Renaissance comedy from the fourteenth- through the seventeenth-centuries. Emphasis is placed on the way in which particular social and historical factors conditioned the forms of dramatic representation which flourished during the Renaissance. Among authors to be studied are Aretino, Machiavelli, Poliziano, and examples of the commedia dell'arte. Critical approach designations: Media, Power and Subjectivities.
