EART 15 Science as a Colonial Practice
Critical examination of the relationship between colonialism and science from the 19th century to today. Reexamines stories on the history of science through a critical feminist and postcolonial framework. In particular, students focus on the role of science in creating ideas of racial categories and hierarchies; ideas that were used to justify colonialist and imperialist endeavors. Ultimately, course turns to decolonizing methods in science, exploring modes of resistance to dominant scientific narratives.
