Education Minor General

Declaring the Minor

To officially declare a general minor in education, students must submit a petition in MyUCSC and share their major Academic Planning Form with the department’s undergraduate advisor. Students pursuing a minor in education should meet with the Education Department’s peer advisor as early as possible.

To be eligible to declare the general minor in education, students must have:

  • completed or be enrolled in EDUC 60, Schooling, Democracy, and Justice ; and

  • be declared in a major.

Course Requirements

The general minor in education consists of six courses totaling 30 credits:

Lower-Division Courses

Take the following course:

EDUC 60Schooling, Democracy, and Justice

Upper-Division Courses

Take one of the following courses:

EDUC 110Popular Education, Democracy, and Social Movements

EDUC 180Introduction to Teaching

EDUC 180 includes a 30-hour classroom observation practicum, plus additional travel time to school sites.

For EDUC 180, background checks (Live Scan Fingerprinting), evidence of a negative TB test or Risk Assessment Form, and Online Mandated Reporter training are required of all participants prior to the first day of instruction. The department will contact enrolled students with information about how to complete these items.

Upper-Division Electives

Students take four 5-credit electives chosen EDUC 102-187.

Electives may be taken before EDUC 110/180.
