HIS 72A History on Screen: The French Revolution in Film
Traces the history of France from 1500-present through film. Course includes light reading, watching one film per week, and weekly discussions of the films. A lecture introducing the historical context and key developments tracing the course of French history precede each film. Lecture attendance is required. Course begins with the Renaissance and French rural history, then explores the Wars of Religion, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, 19th-century Paris, World Wars I and II, decolonization, and the making of a multicultural contemporary French society.
