EART 170 Global Seismology

Introduction to quantitative earthquake and global Earth structure seismology. Topics include basic elasticity, the seismic wave equation, wave characteristics, seismic ray theory, wave reflection, surface waves, normal modes, earthquake and source theory, and seismic signal processing. Students engage in both analytical exercises and coding assignments. The three-hour laboratory component provides practical experience through hands-on exercises in imaging the Earth's interior and seismic data analysis. Students cannot receive credit for this course and EART 270.

Requirements

Prerequisite(s): MATH 11B or MATH 19B, and PHYS 6A or PHYS 5A; or EART 110C; or EART 111. Exceptions can be granted upon request.
