OAKS 145A Early Black Histories of California

Examines the early Black histories of California in order to prepare students for the community engaged archival and public history project in collaboration with the London Nelson Center and the London Nelson Legacy Initiative. Students are exposed to early Black California histories with particular emphasis on how those histories manifested themselves in the Central Coast of California. They also learn how to work collaboratively with community partners and learn best practices for community engaged scholarship. This course must be taken in conjunction with Oakes 145B, Community Engaged History Practicum: The London Nelson Legacy Initiative.
