OAKS 145B COMMUNITY ENGAGED HISTORY PRACTICUM THE LONDON NELSON LEGACY INSTITUTE

Students learn the process of community archiving and public-facing history. Working alongside the archivists at the London Nelson Center, students work to develop the HighJohn-Bey Archives, a comprehensive, publicly accessible digital repository that documents Black Gold Rush-era history in Santa Cruz County, including Watsonville. This project will not only deepen historical understanding but will also provide UCSC students with hands-on experience in archival research, digitization, and community-centered historical documentation. This course must be taken in conjunction with Oakes 145A: Early Black Histories of California.
