Introduction
Students in related graduate programs at UC Santa Cruz may elect to complete the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Designated Emphasis plan. You must obtain approval from your home department and be in good standing to apply for this program. An EEB faculty member will serve as your DE faculty advisor meaning that they will serve on your qualifying exam committee, your dissertation reading committee, and review your coursework plan, which requires 20 credits of EEB graduate coursework.
Requirements
To receive a designated emphasis in ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB), graduate students must complete the following requirements in addition to the degree requirements for the doctorate in their home department:
Committee Composition and Departmental Approvals
1. Identify a designated faculty advisor from among the faculty of the EEB department, who commits to serve on the qualifying examination committee and on the Ph.D. dissertation reading committee.
2. Once a designated faculty advisor has been identified, file intent to complete the designated emphasis in EEB with the EEB department graduate program coordinator.
Course Requirements
Students are required to complete at least 20 credits of EEB coursework. Courses taken to fulfill program requirements within the home department will not count toward the designated emphasis program's required coursework.
Take the following EEB core courses (required for all EEB graduate students):
Enroll in the following course and attend all EEB Department seminars for one quarter:
| BIOE 294 | Ecology, Evolutionary Biology Seminar | 0 |
Enroll in the following course corresponding to their EEB faculty advisor and attend their laboratory group seminars for one quarter:
Take at least two other EEB graduate courses for a minimum total of 20 credits.

Academic Progress
Before applying to graduate, the student must request verification of completion of the designated emphasis program from both their home department and the EEB Graduate Program coordinator. The decision to award a student the designated emphasis will be made by the department chair, the faculty graduate director, or an appropriately constituted faculty committee drawn from the degree-granting program, according to departmental procedure.
