LIT 133L Women Behaving Badly in East Asian Fiction
Explores the “bad behavior” of women characters in East Asian women’s literature. These novels interrogate presiding systems of power in specific East Asian cultures via attention to the female body, which both endures social conditioning and resists it through heightened sensitivity and rich, speculative interiority. These women, through their body epistemology, make waves ranging from interpersonal disruptions to subversive political/societal resistance. Reading in conversation with critical theory, social and historical context, and translation theory. Distribution requirement: Global.
