Examines theoretical practices and compositional methods of 20th-Century American composers including Charles Ives, Henry Cowell, Ruth Crawford, Johanna Beyer, Harry Partch, Conlon Nancarrow, John Cage, Cecil Taylor, James Tenney, Kenneth Gaburo, George Russell, and Ornette Coleman.
