OCEA 115 Antarctic Ecology, Geology, History, and Policy

Introduces Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. During the quarter students examine the natural, scientific, and anthropogenic complexities of these icy environments. Covers topics related to the geologic origins, fossil record, and climate, ecosystem, and anthropogenic dynamics of the frozen continent and its surrounding ocean. Students learn about Antarctica’s unique terrestrial and marine ecology, endemic wildlife, discovery and human history, anthropogenic impacts, and the continent’s international agreements on fisheries and environmental protection.
