LING 177 Computational Cognitive Modeling—Building Minds with Code

Pprovides a hands-on introduction to the field of computational cognitive science, focusing on the challenge of human sentence comprehension. Students embark on a project-based journey to faithfully recreate the classic 1990 neural network model by St. John and McClelland, a foundational paper on natural language interpretation, computation, and learning. The course is divided into two parts. In Part I: The Foundations, students acquire some of the essential skills necessary for computational cognitive science. In Part II: The Replication Project, these skills are applied in a deep dive into the St. John and McClelland paper.
