LIT 60B Introduction to Anime Studies

Explores the impact of anime by analyzing several major productions from the 21st century. Anime is often grouped by demographics and our class investigates the significance and flexibility of these groupings. Course asks: What is the shōnen power fantasy and why is it so important? How are historical figures/events incorporated into fictional storytelling? How does anime approach gender/sexuality? This survey course serves as an introduction to the growing field of anime studies and provides students with the tools for close reading visual texts across cultures.
